The Namibian swimming team are heading to Budapest, Hungary to participate in the World Junior Swimming Championships, taking place from the 20th to the 25th of August 2019. Over 90 teams are expected to participate in the games. The men’s and female’s hockey teams are headed to Stellenbosch, South Africa to compete in Afcon (Africa Cup of Nations) games, in order to qualify for the Olympic games scheduled to take place in Tokyo in 2020.
The three teams received national colours at a ceremony on Wednesday, from the Namibia Sports Commission, as they prepare to represent their country at the continental and international games. Janis Stergiadis, coach for the Junior Swimming team expressed his satisfaction with the team’s hard at work ahead of the competition.
Erwin Haindura, coach for the women’s hockey team extolled the effort of his players in their preparations.
“Thanks to the players for their commitment, it is overwhelming to see them dedicate their lives to the sport. Our aim is to win the competition,” said Haindura.
At the ceremony of colours, the women’s team were awarded N$179 000 to be used for their accommodation, training gear and other needs in South Africa, as they embark on the journey of earning their spot in the Tokyo Games.
