Bank Windhoek’s Coastal Maths Challenge kicks off

A total of 17 schools took part in the first round of the Bank Windhoek Coastal Maths Challenge, hosted in Swakopmund on Wednesday, 12 June 2019. The first round comprised a multiple-choice paper, completed by as many learners as the participating schools wished to enter.
The aim of the competition is to expose learners to problem solving in a context of challenge and fun and to motivate teachers and learners to engage in problem solving activities on a more regular basis.
“Bank Windhoek believes that the Coastal Maths Challenge, positively contributes towards the development of mathematics and we encourage educational institutions countrywide to adopt this initiative. Good luck to all the participating schools,” said Bank Windhoek’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Hayley Allen.
Local mathematics teachers not affiliated to the participating schools, moderated the set papers which were based on international guidelines. The answer sheets of the learners with the best marks are then selected to compete in the second and final round, which will take at the Namib High School in Swakopmund on Wednesday, 10 July 2019 from 14:30 until 17:30.
The second and final round will include 36 learners, 12 from each of the grade 8’s, 9’s and 10’s, selected from the Walvis Bay and the Swakopmund cluster schools. The competing learners then battle it out in three papers: an individual Speed Test, Multiple Choice Test and a Team Test.
The three best individual performers and the three best performing teams in each grade, will receive medals, while the Bank Windhoek Trophy for the Best Performing School, will also be up for grabs. Below is the full list of coastal schools that took part in the first round:
