No Debmarine Cup this season

The incumbent leaders of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) have said that there will be no NFA Cup, better known as the Debmarine Cup this season because there will be no first and second division football this season.
This comment was made by the acting Secretary-General of the NFA, Franco Cosmos in an interview, saying that there would be no point in starting the Debmarine Cup while other leagues (first and second divisions) have not taken place this season.
Cosmos said that the Debmarine Cup will only start during the 2019/2020 soccer season that is nearing to an end in May 2019.
The Debmarine Cup is the country’s oldest club competition, and is equivalent to the Football Association (FA) Cup in England.
In March this year, Cosmos had stated that there would be a Debmarine Cup this season; however due to no lower division games taking place in the country, such competition could not take place.
The Debmarine Cup is in the last of its three-year sponsorship with the NFA, dating back to 2017 when the first edition was hosted.
“The Debmarine Cup will only take place during the 2019/2020 soccer season. It will be unfair to start the Debmarine Cup while we do not have the second and first division leagues. The Namibia Premier League (NPL) already knows that it is only their league that is currently ongoing. We had a meeting with the stakeholders regarding the Debmarine Cup. All the leagues in Namibia will start in August this year,” Cosmos said.
The last edition of the Debmarine Cup was hosted last year with African Stars winning the cup.
The absence of the Debmarine Cup also means that African Stars will not have a chance of winning the treble as they are currently second in the NPL with 44 points, two points adrift of leaders Black Africa who are on top with 44 points from 20 league matches. On the other hand, Stars are in the final of the newly established Standard Bank top Eight Cup of which they will take on Tigers in the final, expected to be played on the 18th of May in Windhoek.
