NAMAs 2019 step up with big category

The Best Male or Female Artist of the year will stand a chance to be N$150 000 richer to win the ‘Artist of the Year’ which is a new category introduced to this years’ biggest national music awards.

This, amongst other changes and amendments were announced this week as the call for entries commences on Monday 1st April for all Namibian artists with music; either singles or albums, commercially released in Namibia between the 1st December 2017 and 30 November 2018, to submit their applications by completing either a manually printed form or via the secure online electronic entry system.

The application period runs until Friday, 26 April 2019.

The newly introduced category will become the 25th category of the annual musical highlight; Afrikaans, Damara Punch, Oviritje, Soukous/Kwasa, Afro Pop, Gospel, Kwaito, R&B, Rap/Hip Hop, House, Reggae, Traditional, Collaboration, Single, Newcomer, Music video, Song of the Year, Pan African Artist, Best Album, Best Group, Producer, Lifetime achiever and the newly added category Artist of the Year.
The new category will now see the best talent in Namibia, whether male or female, competing in this category on an equal platform for the accolade of the overall Best Artist of the Year in Namibia overall.

“The nominees for Artist of the Year would be whoever wins Best male and Best Female. The artist of the year would be a judge’s vote so whoever has the highest score between the two would be the Artist of the year,” said Tim Ekandjo.

The organising committee has also made amendments to the Best Music Video category with the competition only allowing one entry per artist this time. This can only be music videos produced from a master recording (master original song) that was released within the entry period will be allowed.

An amendment has also been made to the ‘Best Producer’ category. Moving forward the ‘Best Producer’ nominees will be decided by the top 5 overall best scores received from the judge’s vote for musical entries nominated within the Best Male, Best Female and Best Group/Duo of the Year categories.

The date of the NAMAs 2019 awards ceremony will be announced in the next few weeks.  Applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the rules and regulations before applying.
