Fashion designer and Director of high fashion house-Chanel, passed away on 19 February. He was born in Germany on 10 September 1933. He was rushed to a Paris hospital on Monday 10 February and died the next day.
It is said that Karl Lagerfeld who was actually born as Karl Lagerfeldt removed the ‘t’ from his surname to make it sound more commercial.
The industry heavyweight was known to be one of the most creative and inexhaustible figures of the industry as he worked up until his death. Although he was well versed in many creative aspects including photography and acting, he was best known as the creative power behind the modern revival of Chanel, the nothing short of legendary fashion house founded in the 1990s be Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel.
Karl left footprints in the fashion and all round creative business for 71 years with his bold decision to move to Paris at 14 years old working on a series of sketches and fabric samples for a design competition two years after.
He later designed collections for Chloe, Fendi, H & M and an Italian shoe brand (just to name a few) all while owning his own label which he later sold to Tommy Hilfiger in 2005. The first Karl Lagerfeld shop, which he opened in 2015, is situated in Doha, Qatar.
Lagerfeld lost his life to a battle with pancreatic cancer. This type of cancer starts when abnormal cells in the pancreas grow and divide out of one’s jurisdiction and forms a tumor. It causes weight loss, yellowing of skin and or eyes and pain in the abdomen and back amongst many other symptoms.
Lagerfeld began being absent from various fashion shows that he was expected to attend. A month ago he chose not to greet an audience because he felt too tired. This is when concerns around his health grew, even though his health troubles began intensifying a couple of weeks before his death.
In April of 2018, the Chanel Director revealed in an interview that his wish is to be cremated and that his ashes should be dispersed with his mother’s. In the same revealing interview, Lagerfeld also revealed that his Birman cat is one of his heirs of his large fortune.
He assured his family and friends not to worry because there is enough to go around.
