Nalitye’s VJ Search journey

“I have always known that I wanted to be in the entertainment industry from a young age, although I wasn’t exactly sure which part of entertainment I would pursue” these are the words of twenty one year old, Nalitye Shan.

Shan currently finds herself in the Top 3 final round of the MTV Base VJ Search competition and is one of the few people who have had their dreams of being in the entertainment industry materialising into something fruitful.

MTV Base VJ Search is a talent search competition that awards its winner a 12 month contract with the network, where the winner will host some of MTV Base shows and interview some of the biggest music stars in the world at international shows such as the Video Music Awards, European Music Awards, and The MTV Africa Music Awards.

The competition is said to have opened doors for the likes of Sizwe Dlomo, Sandile Ntshingila, Nomuzi Mabena and Tshego Koke. In an interview with The Lounge, Shan shared her experience of being part of the MTV Base VJ Search competition journey as well as how she got into the entertainment industry.

Born in Oshakati, raised in Windhoek and now based in Cape Town, South Africa, Shan is currently a student at AFDA, the School for the Creative Economy that offers courses in film, television, performance, business innovation and technology, radio and podcasting.

From the age of four, a bold Shan braced her school stage by partaking in beauty pageants and went on to participate in her high school’s annual beauty pageant.

During her teen years she also worked at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation as a TV presenter on a kiddies entertainment show called ‘Frenzy Special’ as well as on a teen entertainment show called ‘Just Teenz’. In December 2017 she was a finalist in an annual beauty pageant hosted by the international beauty brand called Signature Cosmetics.

That was just the beginning of her dreams. When she moved to Cape Town she found out about the MTV Base VJ Search competition through the channel itself.

“I remember scrolling through TV channels and coming across the show during Nomuzi Mabena’s season. From then on, I was hooked. MTV base had auditions in 4 cities Durban, Cape Town, East London and Johannesburg and chose two contestants from each.

I auditioned in Cape Town, and was chosen as one of the top 2 contestants. All chosen contestants met in Johannesburg for further competition. The contestants face eliminations each week, and I am now part of the remaining seven”.

Describing the journey as one that is surreal, Shan noted that the competition has been one of biggest highlights of her career.

“Being a contestant in this competition has awarded me opportunities to travel within South Africa, meet, network with and learn from various industry professionals. Not only have I sharpened my TV presenting skills, but I also learned more about myself as a person”.

Shan aims on winning the competition. She further highlighted that MTV Base is a vibrant TV platform that celebrates youth, culture and all that it stands for.

“I am a young, fit and fabulous individual, and I believe that MTV Base reflects my colourful life and habits. I have a passion for people, music and being in front of the camera, so becoming an MTV Base VJ winner would be the absolute joy of my life.

The VJ search presents upcoming talent with the opportunity to enter and work within the entertainment industry. MTV Base continues to open up the industry for us who are the youth”. Some personalities she looks up to of current are Nomuzi Mabena who won the MTV Base VJ search competition in 2012 who she notes has gone on to gain more accolades.

“Mabena is a TV presenter, MC, musician and entrepreneur. I also look up to actress Lupita Nyong’o because she serves a daily reminder that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.

Being only one episode away from crowning the 2018 MTV Base VJ Search winner, Shan revealed that the world is now left with the choice to vote for their favourite finalist out of the remaining 3 contestants.

She calls on her fan base as well as everyone who is interested in watching the competition as it unfolds till the finals to tune in on MTV base, channel 322 on DSTV Wednesday at 21h30 while at the same time voting for her as well by visiting www.mtvbase.com.
