Windhoek will soon host its very own Art Battle. Initiated by Jaimee-Lee Diergaardt from Something–Artsy, Art Battles take place in cities around the world. “It thought it was my genius idea and then I Googled it and realised that it was already taking place in the world. This will be Africa’s first and Namibia is lucky to host it first.”
Art Battle is live competitive painting. Painters create the best work they can in 20 minutes. As they work, patrons move around the easels, while closely watching the creative process while listening to inspiring music. Namibian artists who will participate in the event are San Mari Steenkamp, Romielle Lopes, Barton Ting, Sunya Beukes, Magda Krone, Charles Mufaya and Hage Nasheotwalwa. A number of students are also expected to participate. The final prize is a trip overseas to compete in the International Art Battle there.
The medium is acrylic paint and the tools allowed are brushes, palette knives or any non-mechanical implements. At the end of the round, the audience votes democratically for their favourite painting and bids in silent auction to take the work home.
It is our expectation that this wonderful evening of creativity and community will help showcase local artists and connect Windhoek to towns and cities around the world! Tickets are available through Events Today, Pay Today and Airtime machines at N$70 early bird and N$100 at the door. The event will take place at FNCC.
