Zig Ziglar once said that it’s not what you’ve got; it’s what you use that makes the difference. Everyone started something from nothing, rich people, successful people, top achievers and all these people we label as ‘have made it in life’ all started from a place where they had nothing. But often times we overlook this reality and think that these people had it all from the beginning.
I like the story that Doctor Helena Ndume once shared at an event about a conversation that she had with her niece. She told her niece how she used to wash towels by hand in a hotel that she worked for while she was studying in Germany to get pocket money and the niece’s response was with lyrics from Drake’s song “started from the bottom, now we’re here”.
It’s true that everyone started from somewhere and everything is acquired through time. So if you ever doubted becoming someone someday I am inviting you to rethink the whole notion that you have nothing because it’s likely the opposite. It’s the whole proverbial notion of whether the glass is half-empty or half-full. There is always something there. You can either be the pessimist who sees the glass as half-empty or the optimist who sees the glass as half-full.
We all have something and in fact, everything that you have in your life now is something including your problems. It’s okay to want to get rid of all your problems but just so you know your problems are of value, they help you grow and become better just like how your disappointments make you a stronger person.
Even beyond your problems or abilities, there is one more thing that you have. Even if you have nothing to your name, you still have something and that’s YOU. You are the most powerful thing you can ever have in your entire life. YOU have the ability to create the life you want because you have more power in you than anything else in the world that you can acquire. You also have unlimited potential and capacity to do whatever you want.
It doesn’t matter if you have nothing now, because you can get out there and create something for yourself. Whatever it is that you can acquire is nothing in comparison with YOU because you are a dynamic being who is able to create, break down problems, form solutions and Move Mountains.
I like how people use the phrase “you are not ugly, you are just broke” when comparing celebrity’s to their past live. Of course there was a point when they didn’t have anything to their names and they have gone through hardships to get to where they are now. Also this quote “your current circumstance is not your ultimate future, you can always change” gives me hope that everyone can be who they want to be and have what they want to have but it takes courage. Therefore, focusing on what you really want is a much more empowering manner to live.
Everyone started from somewhere and it doesn’t matter what you have or don’t have now. What’s more important is that you are clear on what you want. Just as I said in one of my previous column God doesn’t bless some – He blesses all.
