African fashionista talks…

Screen Shot 2017-03-03 at 9.53.24 AMA woman should be able to pull off style without looking uncomfortable and that is the golden rule to getting it right when it comes to fashion. Antonia Shinana is no stranger to high fashion and elegance. Her versatile and sophisticated garments might have clinched her last year’s Southern Africa fashionista of the year title but the 27-year-old fashionista has perfect looks that exude strength, confidence and power.

Hailing from Oshikuku, in the northern part of Namibia, Shinana attended her primary school in Windhoek before her high school years at Otjikoto Secondary School in Tsumeb. She furthered her studies in Cape Town at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology where she completed a Bachelor of Technology in Project Management. The young fashionista also holds a National Diploma in Environmental Health Science. As a young woman making strides in her career, Shinana currently works for ADForce Namibia as the accounts executive. She is also a part-time makeup artist and an entrepreneur.

Shinana has won several accolades, among them, several pageants such as Miss National Youth Council Namibia, Best Catwalk of the World 2009 in Bulgaria and Miss Tourism Queen International Namibia in 2011.

Which words best describe you?

I am very flamboyant, a foodie, empathetic, persistent, a risk-taker and astute

Being a fashionista…

I love the fact that I can put on whatever I please and get away with it, and that I have no rules to follow.

Being the Southern African Fashionista of the Year…

Having won that title means people actually recognizes and appreciates my fashion sense… lol! I was pretty surprised to have been nominated and it really motivated me to keep at it.

How did you get into fashion?

I can’t exactly say I got into fashion. I am a born fashionista…haha! There’s not a time that I remember “learning” about fashion. I just always made my own rules.

What is the biggest lesson you have learnt within the fashion industry?

I have learned to never allow criticism to dictate my style. People would make fun or question something I wore and ironically end up copying it.

What are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about fashion and business.

What is the one thing that people don’t know about you?

What people don’t know is that I am an excellent cook.

Best beauty tip is to…

Drink lots of water because it gives you a beautiful and glowing skin.

Accessory of all times…

I would have to say my handbag. I rarely accessorize. I find accessories such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets and so forth quite uncomfortable although they could really make a statement on an outfit.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I am mostly inspired by COMFORT. I always want to be comfortable. Other than that, Rihanna and Marjorie Harvey are the perfect inspiration.

Fashion in Namibia is…

GROWING! I see now we have lifestyle and fashion magazines that capture and showcase latest trends, more make-up artists are emerging in the industry (such as myself) and we have Namibians that are being nominated and winning international fashion awards. Everyone makes the effort to look fashionable and it is great to see.

So, what is trending?

Box shoulders, sky-high platforms, stripes, mommy/boyfriend jeans, cut outs, statement earrings, bold lips, glossy eyelids and lingerie look.
Fashion is a language which tells a story about the person who wears it. It could also be a means of self-expression that allows people to try on many roles in life. It comes in different versions, which accommodate the chameleon in everyone. Fashion is really about change, which is necessary to keep life interesting. Namibia has a number of established and emerging fashionistas which is really interesting.
