The Lira Master Class event organised by 99FM is set to take place on 20 August 2016.
The event which is sponsored by DStv, Flying Fish and My Republik, is set to be an experience that is unique in form and aims to do more than entertain. The main idea behind the Lira Master Class is to transfer skills, tools, attitudes and insights from one of Africa’s most successful musicians, businesswomen and brands.
Speaking on what inspired 99FM to organise the Lira Master Class, the General Manager at Radio 99Fm, Christine Hugo said that it was in line with their brand, “The 99FM brand blueprint is to inspire Afropolitan, urban Namibians to be the masters of their own destiny and we curate and create experiences and content that not only inspires, but also provides tools, direction and a network of experts in Namibia to enable Namibians to live the best life possible.”
She further said “Lira is an internationally acclaimed African icon. She personifies much of what the 99FM brand values because she has worked hard to make her own life happen the way she wanted it to be, with discipline and integrity. Her success as an artist is as remarkable as her success as a businesswoman and brand. This is why 99FM wanted to create an opportunity for local artists and the public to learn about the story behind the story of Lira and to find the inspiration, guidance, tools and skills that they can apply right here in Namibia, to write their own stories.”
Meanwhile, the General Manager of MultiChoice Namibia, Roger Gertze, said that this sponsorship is an obvious fit with DStv due to Lira’s allegiances with M-Net’s popular show, ‘The Voice South Africa’ and her seven-part reality TV series ‘Lira: Dreamchaser’ that was broadcast on FOX (channel 125) earlier this year. “As we would like to see more local content on the DStv platform, we are excited about the prospect for Namibian talent to seek inspiration from such a renowned artist right here on home soil. We want to use every opportunity for knowledge transfer to build the local television and entertainment industry.”
Commenting on why My Republik is involved in the project, the owner of the Namibian clothing brand, Ally Angula said, “The creative industry, which includes clothing, is a Global Economic Powerhouse and through local brand building initiatives we can make the creative industry not only a contributor to our economy’s GDP but also get it to be recognised as an industry with the potential of growing the Namibian economy as well as a foreign income generator. We are however cognisant that it’s a nascent industry and therefore talent development for the sector to play a meaningful role is crucial. ”
Expressing their reasons for sponsoring the event, Linda Buckingham, National Trade Marketing Manager of SABMiller said “Flying Fish is very excited to be a part of the sponsorship of Lira in the master class event. Flying fish is inspiring the youth to try something different and step out of the mundane and normal way of life and experience life with flavour and through fresh eyes.”
At the launch of the event this week, media practitioner were accorded the opportunity to Skype with star Lira who briefly narrated how she keeps pushing and remains at the top. “I live by the code that things always work out for me. Whatever you focus on becomes a dominant factor in your life,” she shared in response to a number of questions.
The Lira Master Class project consists of two separate events, a Master Class with local artists followed by a music concert at the Warehouse. At the Master Class, 40 invited Namibian musicians will have the opportunity to experience a hands-on master class with Lira. This is a unique opportunity that will greatly serve the local music industry with tools and inspiration to further their careers as musicians in Namibia and beyond.
The second event is a Soul Session Master Class experience at the Warehouse Theatre. The evening event will be in the form of a soul talk session, where Lira will share the inspiring story of her life and career, with a few songs in between that have been significant to her along her journey.
Tickets for the Soul Session Master Class on Saturday, 20 August at 18h30 are available at My Republik at the Grove Mall as well as at www.staytoday.com.na
