Sure, trying new things is fun but kicking old, unhealthy habits is even better. Almost everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease; that it can shorten one’s life by 10 years or more and that the habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year. So how come people are still lighting up? The answer, in a word, is ‘addiction’. Quitting the smoking habit does not only help one’s health improve, but people who quit smoking get a boost in their quality of life.
Smoking is common within social classes and certain age groups, most alarmingly the youth. Smoking may be the perfect to being a youth but it may be the perfect counter to a terminal condition. ‘I Quit Smoking Namibia’ states that most people are aware of the health hazards inherent in the habit of smoking and that tobacco smoke is a source of lung cancer as well as many other serious illnesses. Today, there is more awareness about how bad smoking is for one’s health which is why it is restricted or banned in almost all public places. To most people smoking comes as a result of influence either by family or friends. Many youth try desperately to fit in with groups of friends, be well-liked, cool, and part of the “in” crowd. As for Apolonia Wakalenda, she just wanted to try it out as she saw people smoking. “I was just trying it out but little did I know I was going to be addicted,” she said.
Once youstart, it’s hard to stop people start smoking for a variety of different reasons. Some think it looks cool. Others start because their family members or friends smoke. However, smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal. “I Quit Smoking Namibia” affirms that every smoker knows how addictive tobacco can be as a drug and how difficult it is to part with this lifelong companion being solely reliant on one’s own will power. Smoking does more than just harming the lungs. Smoking takes a toll on one’s mouth. Smokers have more oral health problems than non-smokers, like mouth sores, ulcers and gum disease. They are more likely to have cavities and lose their teeth at a younger age.
“I Quit Smoking Namibia” states that when one smoke a packet of 20 cigarettes every day, they inhale 400 mg of nicotine more or less per week. If this quantity was injected instantly it would kill a person like a gunshot. “By smoking, you are not just damaging your lungs but also increasing your exposure to smog and other polluting agents that are no longer blocked through the cleaning system,” they reveal.
According to I Quit Smoking Namibia, other damage occurs also such as; risks of cancer affecting numerous other organs apart from the lungs and the respiratory tract, bladder, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, neck and body of the uterus, hair loss, bad breathe, spots on skin and teeth as well as damaged skin amongst the others.
“Women who smoke run twice the risk of extra-uterus pregnancies compared to non-smoking women. The former are also more prone to dysmenorrhea, uterus neck cancer, osteoporosis is more precocious and they enter menopause two
years earlier. Smoking women who breast-feed their babies transmit nicotine to their baby. Thus, children of smoking parents run the risk
of catching bronchitis, bronco-pneumonia and otitis, through passive smoking.”
Smoking has an end…
Apolonia Wakalenda who smoked for almost fifteen years said that her addiction to cigarettes came to an end when her mom passed on. “That day I had a full pack of cigarettes and I just gave it away. I just felt I didn’t want to smoke anymore. It was a difficult U-turn I had to make but I had to be honest to myself. Up until this day I no longer smoked, I don’t even get the cravings,” she said.
Quitting is hard, but if you can actually do it, there are a lot of benefits that one might not have thought about. You will be able to get over the loss of smoking, the loss of that friend, the cigarette. The best way to stop smoking is to take all the important steps and say goodbye to the smoking life by throwing away the last packet and the lighter.
The crux of the matter
It does not matter how you hold that cigarettes, the effects of smoking can amputate your health with no doubt. It boils your blood pressure, introduces you to heart problems, destroys your blood vessels, chews your lungs, complicates diabetes, brings you early menopause, dims your vision, hits you hard with a cough, wrinkles your skin and places a huge question mark on your ability to have a healthy family. So before you face a life of up and down mood stimulation, disturbed appetite and a body vulnerable to little infections, put down the cigarette. Else, every cigarette you light is a nail into your own coffin.
